Winter Break in the Northwoods

As the holiday season approaches, we are getting excited for the week between Christmas and New Years when kids don’t have school, emails rarely get answered, and we have an excuse to get outside to play in the snow. We suggest that you use your last vacation days of 2017 to venture to the Northwoods for Winter Break (Friday, December 22nd - Monday, January 1st). Here's a list of our favorite winter activities as well as a calendar of events so you can plan ahead and love every second of your time in the Northwoods. We hope that you have the best week - maybe we will see you out there!

Adventure Suggestions

For the Cross Country Skiers

Significant amounts of snow are piling up in the Northwoods this week, which means we have officially reached winter wonderland status! What could be better than gliding through snowy forests on two skis? Most cross country ski trail systems in the North have been busy grooming and are opening within the week. Here's a list of our favorites so you can ski a different trail every day over break:

North Lakeland Trails in Manitowish Waters
Razorback Ridges in Sayner
Raven Trail in Woodruff
WinMan Trails in Winchester
Schlect Lake Trails in Minocqua
Minocqua Winter Park in Minocqua
Wolverine Ski Trails in Ironwood, MI
ABR Trails in Ironwood, M

For the Downhill Skiers/Snowboarders

What the Northwoods lacks in elevation, we make up for in soul (and shorter chairlift lines). Take a short drive to Big Snow Country in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for great snow, fun trails, and excellent apres ski food + entertainment. Check out these favorite spots to hit the slopes:

Blackjack Mountain: Bessemer, MI*
Indianhead Mountain: Wakefield, MI*
Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort: Bessemer, MI

Big Snow Bonus: Blackjack & Indianhead have merged into Big Snow Resort - ski two different mountains on one pass!

For the Snowshoers

Strap on your snowshoes for a relaxing walk through snow-covered tall pines, around frozen lakes, and across boardwalks over the bog. Follow a trail or forge your own right outside of your front door. We highly recommend venturing to some of our favorite groomed and ungroomed snowshoe trails:

Catherine Wolter Wilderness Area: Presque Isle
Fallison Lake Nature Trail: Boulder Junction
Lumberjack Trails: Boulder Junction
North Lakeland Discovery Center Trails
Raven Trail: Woodruff
WinMan Trails: Winchester

For the Bikers

Biking on snow? Yes please! Fat tire bikes give you the opportunity to fly through wooded trails even when they are snow-covered. The Northwoods has embraced this growing sport by grooming summer mountain biking trails for winter riding and hosting events for you to try a fat tire bike out for the first time.

For the slower pace

If winter sports are not your thing, there is still plenty to do in the Northwoods for Winter Break. Take the week to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with friends + family with these fun activities:

Take a sleigh ride in Eagle River (for private rides - call ahead!)
Read a book around the fire as the snow falls at Dixie’s Coffee House in Manitowish Waters
Wander the shops in downtown Manitowish Waters, Boulder Junction, or Minocqua
Pamper yourself at The Spa at Manitowish Waters
Paint your own Pottery at Earth Goods in Minocqua

For the family

Go snow tubing at Minocqua Winter Park or Mt. Zion in Ironwood
Fly through the pines at Northwoods Zip Line (yep, a new Northwoods winter activity!)
Go ice skating at North Lakeland School! Rink is open daily, Dec. 26th - 31st, 10am to 6pm
Make a snowman in Koller Park in downtown Manitowish Waters
