Rainy Day at the Cabin

Rainy days are a great excuse to be cozy with the ones you love or let out your inner child and jump in every puddle you see. Whether you choose to curl up with a book or put on your rain boots to brave the storm, the Northwoods has plenty to do when skies are grey.

  1. Learn the story behind the legendary Stormy Kromer hat that's in outdoor stores across the country! The Stormy Kromer Headquarters is located just 45 minutes north of Manitowish Waters and offers factory tours.
For a bite to eat, stop into Contrast Coffee for coffee + a pastry or Bell Chalet for pasta + pizza. If you have more time to spend in the Upper Peninsula, stop into Dan's Antiques in downtown Ironwood to search for a vintage treasure (a favorite antiquing stop of ours!).

  2. Take a cycling class at Studio 715 in Mincoqua. If you've never been on a cycling bike, no worries! They provide all the equipment and instruction necessary... we guarantee you will have a great time.

  3. Grab your friends, bring your intuition, and crack the code at Northwoods Escape Room. If you're lucky enough to escape, check out Tribute Brewing Company afterwards.

  4. Explore the latest fishing rods at St. Croix Rods Factory Store. Tours are available on weekdays. Afterwards, stop into Valerie Mae's for a delicious meal, sourced from local farms.

Slow Down.

  1. Follow the beer trail: Aqualand Alehouse, Minocqua Brewing Company, Rocky Reef Brewing Co., Northern Waters Distillery, and The Vine: Wine, Beer, + Cocktail Lounge. We recommend Kobe Sushi in Minocqua for sustenance when the drinking gets tough.

  2. Simply enjoy a good book or conversation over a cup of coffee at Dixie's Coffee House. Rain or shine, they have one of the best views in the Northwoods. Grab a book from our Summer Reading List for in front of their fireplace.

  3. Pull out the board games and gather around the coffee table with a cup of your favorite tea. Looking for a new favorite game? Stop into The Lake House in Manitowish Waters.

  4. Listen to the rain fall from the screen porch. You get the sound, smell and cool breeze of the falling rain without getting wet. Need a screen porch to sit on? Grab a drink and an appetizer at Aurora Borealis Restaurant or Parkside Tavern.

  5. Shopping is always a great way to explore the area and enjoy the day. Start in Boulder Jct at Moondeer & Friends Gallery, Coontail, + Alder Lake Cranberry Gift Shop.

With The Family.

  1. Bring the family to swim and slide in the only waterpark in the Northwoods at The Waters of Minocqua. With an indoor-outdoor pool, hot tub, kiddie play area, and two 3-story slides, the kiddos will be dreaming of rainy days on your next vacation
  2. Pizza makes everyone happy. Enjoy some of our local favorites:
Minocqua Pizza Company, The Pizza Vault, Bad Bones BBQ, Anglers Fine Food

  3. Don’t let rain showers get in the way, put on a swimsuit and let the kids swim in the drizzle.

  4. Escape to the Northwoods Children's Museum in Eagle River to enjoy real hands-on fun together with 24 interactive exhibits. Stop into Soda Pops for a treat, an original soda fountain and casual restaurant.

  5. Grab the rain jackets and head out for a walk:
Star Lake Nature Trail, North Trout Lake Nature Trail, NLDC Interpretive Trail

  6. Stop in Boulder Junction for ice cream: The Ice Shanty Drive-In, Mad Dog Jakes

  7. Enjoy a famous family-style dining experience in Minocqua at Paul Bunyan's Cook Shanty, a camp style breakfast surrounded with logging camp artifacts and historic photos.

  8. Catch a new flick at Lakeland Cinema.
