Northerly's Essentials for April Showers

As we move through this transition season (and check things off of our Spring Bucket List), a few essentials are key to making the North a little more enjoyable. From recipes to hiking boots, here is a list of what we are loving this spring.

Pack it up, pack it in

As we head out on spring adventures, we find we have more gear we need to bring along for changing weather. For your refillable water bottle, sunscreen, and extra layers, a light + reliable day pack like this one from Matador or this one from Patagonia will fit everything you need without the bulk.

Stay Dry

Potentially one of the most important spring essentials - a great rain jacket. Don’t let April showers keep you from any adventures with our go-to Torrentshell Jacket from Patagonia. Mix form with function for running errands or outdoor events with this Copenhagen Raincoat from Helly Hansen.

Cooking Light

Who is ready for fresh, lighter fare full of sweet fruits and crisp vegetables? We’re with you! We have been drooling over this Spring Roll Bowl from Pinch of Yum and this Chopped Garden Salad from Hello Jalepeño. If you are planning to start a home garden this year, love shopping at farmers markets or just want to learn how to cook seasonally, grab a copy of Joshua McFadden’s Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables.

Happy Trails, Happy Feet

Keep your feet warm + dry on muddy spring trails with waterproof hiking boots. For ankle support, we love these tried + true Gypsom II boots from Keen. If you like moving at a faster pace, try our favorite X Ultra 3 GTX cross training shoe from Salomon. For a great (and super cute) everyday waterproof shoe that you can hit the trails or the town in, we love the Forsake Patch boot.

Fresh Scents

We love to make our homes cozy in the winter with pine, chai, or amber scented candles, but it is time to freshen it up! Get fruity with the Nest Grapefruit Candle, smell the roses with Library Flower’s Field & Flowers candle, or splurge on the beautiful Calone 17 candle from Le Labo.

Daily Sunscreen

Protect that ghostly winter skin by adding sunscreen back into your morning routine. Keep it simple with Burt’s Bees Day Lotion or step it up by adding a little tint with Beautycounter Dew Skin Moisturizing Coverage.

Gear up for camping season

As the weather gets warmer we look forward to nights spent in the woods under the stars. Add to the excitement by picking out new camping gear like this tent, a collaboration between Polar Stuff + Pendleton, a great camping stove from Camp Chef, and hydration for the whole group from Hydroflask.

Listen to something new

Whether you are outside doing yard work, inside the house spring cleaning, or hitting the open road for a spring trip, it is always fun to have something new to listen to. We love podcasts, and some of our favorite recent finds are The Allusionist, Ear Hustle, Dirty John, and My Favorite Murder. Or if music is more your style, listen to this Morning Coffee, Happy Folk, or Relax & Unwind playlist.

In Bloom

Having fresh flowers in the house can lighten the mood and bring a little sunshine to any rainy day. While you wait for your tulips and daffodils to light up your yard, stop by the local flower shop and grab a bouquet. Local tip: Trig's Village Market Floral in Manitowish Waters always has great choices!
